My cat Kaiko and his favorite things that keep him happy. From food to toys and litter. Here’s everything you need to know.
Kaiko in Hawaiian translates to sea with strong current. ‘kai’ which means sea and ‘ko’ which means strong current. This name definitely describes him. He is both rambunctious and moody but yet calm and snuggly.
I first met and adopted Kaiko in 2013 from the Hawaiian Humane Society. He was about four months old and super playful. The first day he came home he kept us up all night because he was pawing and biting at our feet. He liked to play hard by running on and off the bed while chasing string. He would tire himself out and would pant as his tongue fell out.
Currently, it’s Colin and I with our two cats and one loving dog. Kaiko loves to spend his day looking outside and watching the world. He also loves to open cabinet doors and sleep inside them. He loves to horseplay and is the only cat I know that likes to be kissed on the face and be held.
I found that raising a cat is no easy feat but here we are with him being seven at the time of this writing and he’s still very happy. Here are some honestly good products that I have used throughout the years and I’ll be reviewing each of Kaiko’s favorite cat things below.

Inaba Cat Treats
INABA Churu Tuna & Chicken Lickable Creamy Purée Cat Treats 5 Flavor Variety Pack of 50 Tubes
One of Kaiko’s favorite cat things is famously known as “cat crack”. It’s a treat that comes with 5 flavors and 50 tubes in a plastic jar. It’s like a GoGurt for cats and will last you for months. Plus you don’t have to use all of it in one squeeze you can refrigerate the rest for later. Kaiko’s favorite flavor is tuna.
Here he is enjoying his favorite treat.

Blue Buffalo Cat Food
Blue Buffalo Indoor Health Natural Adult Dry Cat Food, Chicken & Brown Rice 15-lb
Kaiko has been eating the Blue Buffalo indoor brand since he was born. He has never had any issues with his food. I prefer dry food over wet food because it controls his weight. I feel that sticking to one brand is best rather than experimenting with different ones.
The Neater Feeder – A Food Bowl For Messy Eaters
Neater Feeder Express (Small Dog) – With Stainless Steel Dog Bowls and Mess Proof Pet Feeder
Kaiko is a very messy eater. He loves to nudge his food around and likes to put more food in his mouth than it can fit. His food used to get all over my table until I found this. It’s super easy to fill and clean. I’ve had it since he was a kitten and here’s what it looks like on our table right now.

A Water Fountain
PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Dog and Cat Water Fountain, Automatic Drinking Fountain for Pets, 168 Oz.
Kaiko loves to drink out of this fountain and get his face wet. This is perfect if you have multiple cats or dogs like we do. It’s easy to remove the back to fill up the water and the water lasts for about two days depending on how hot it is. It has a flow valve where you can control the waterfall and it’s super quiet. We’ve had no issues with this and we’ve had it for years. Here’s what it looks like in our house.

Favorite Cat Things – Top Entry Litter Box
IRIS USA (586962) Top Entry Cat Litter Box with Cat Litter Scoop, White & Beige Punt-530, Large
This is Kaiko’s second litter box. The first standard litter box would cause a lot of litter to track around the house. Since we decided to adopt another cat, who did not like our previous box, I looked on amazon and found this peculiar looking thing. While skeptical about having a top opening and if the cats would like it I still gave it a try.
To my surprise, they took to it immediately. We had zero issues. The opening of the box is large and has grooves that catch the litter. This has reduced litter tracking about 75% than our previous box. It’s easy to clean because the top snaps off, and it’s super sleek with a modern day look. We receive compliments on this often. Here’s what it looks like in our bathroom.

SWheat Scoop – Natural Wheat Cat Litter
After researching and trying different brands of cat litter from Pellet types to the World’s Best Cat Litter, I can honestly say that this is my favorite one. It 100% controls smell, is super easy to scoop, tracks A LOT less than the others (except the pellet type) and lasts a long time. The price point on this is somewhat higher but trust me when I say that this is the one and only litter you’ll ever need.
Favorite Cat Things – Scratchers
Kitty City XL Wide Corrugate Cat Scratchers 3 Pieces, Cat Scratching, Cat Scratch Pad
If you adopt an indoor cat and have furniture then trust me you will need a cat scratcher. Otherwise, I promise you that your furniture will get completely torn up. These scratching pads help with that problem because it distracts them away from your furniture and fills their need of scratching. I like these particular scratchers because they’re large and come in a pack of three. It’s also reversible so you can flip it over to reveal a brand new side. Here’s what it looks like in our house.

Favorite Cat Things – Toys
Your cats need to be stimulated while being indoors. They like to play hide and seek, stalk, chase and run around the house to expel their energy. I’ve built up a collection of toys throughout the years and here’s some of the best ones I’ve found so far.
Round Toy
SmartyKat Hot Pursuit Cat Toy Concealed Motion Toy
Kaiko generally likes to lay down on top of this toy and swat at the feather. He pays attention to it for a good thirty minutes and never gets bored of it when I bring it out.

Fishing toy
Kaiko’s favorite cat things to do is to chase feathers and soft squishy things. It’s cute because it’s like a fishing pole. It retracts outward and you can pretend like you’re fly fishing with your cat.
Butterfly Toy
This is a fun and interactive toy that Kaiko loves to paw. This little thing flutters around in circles and will interact with your cat by moving in different directions when stopped. Here’s Kaiko playing with it below.

Laser Toy
In full disclosure, I don’t own this but I want it. We have a hand laser pointer that drives our cats crazy. They like to chase the red dot all over the house. This one is an automatic laser pointer and I’m a little skeptical about how long a cat would play with it but from reading the reviews it looks promising!
Favorite Cat Things – Cat Tower
This is a splurge kind of item. If you have enough climbing and hiding spaces around your house then you don’t necessarily need this tower or you could invest in a smaller cat tower. Since we adopted another cat, we knew that we needed to create more space for them. This came in handy because it offers them a perch to view their surroundings and cubbies to hide in as well. Kaiko loves to perch on the top as pictured below.

To summarize, raising a cat or any animal isn’t easy at all. But I’ve found that researching the right products and being open-minded to try them have really helped our little family thrive. If you’d like to leave any feedback or comments I would love to hear them below! Thank you so much for reading about Kaiko’s favorite cat things!
